Life after AEDM

Lady Gaga
Originally uploaded by Kagedaijin
So, AEDM is over, but drawing goes on. I'll be going back to posting my work on Flickr rather than here, so head over and check it out if you're interested.

December will be taken up by some rather pressing craft projects, but I'm going to keep at drawing as well. Here's one I did today of Lady Gaga.

Craft projects aside, I plan to do a crapton of drawing practice, experimentation in mixed media, and some personal journaling. Most of them won't make it to Flickr - my hope is that without the constant pressure of an audience, I'll be more inclined to try new stuff and make loads of mistakes, which will eventually lead to more material I'll be excited to share with everyone. So, I'll be away, but I'll be back soon enough.

Cheers!

Twilight

Thinking about Twilight, despite the fact that I've never read it (and probably never will :P). I've read all of Cleolinda's "15 Minute" posts on the films and books though. Does that count? Regardless, I can't resist the urge to editorialize and think about how I would do things differently.

Edward Cullen did not choose to become a vampire. Bella Swan did. This is key.

In my version of Twilight, Edward turns Bella much much earlier. Probably by the end of the first book. The rest of the series deals with the personal and political fallout of that choice.

Does Bella regret her choice after she has changed? What if she doesn't? She did want it, after all. What if she's perfectly happy being a vampire? What if, in fact, she's way more comfortable with it than Edward ever was. Uncomfortably comfortable with it. "Warm human blood, yum!" comfortable.

So, Edward, your sweetie is chafing against coven rules, and she's not the innocent girl you met in High School any more. Plus, her modern sensibilities - let's just assume that Bella's character is a bit more modern and a bit less Mormon in this version - are clashing with those of everyone else in the family. None of them were born after World War II, after all.

People are starting to talk. You've lost your moral compass, and just when you were starting to think there was hope for your soul after all. You and Bella still have feelings for each other, but everything in the relationship is new now and you both have to try hard to make it work.

Bella, the Volturi have approached you, in secret. They want you to join them, and add your talents to their own. The reward is status, blood, and power. Thing is, they're even more antiquated and stratified than the Cullens are. And, you still love Edward, despite all his flaws.

Oh, and guys, the werewolves are coming back...and they want you all dead. Enjoy.

Our instructor has encouraged me to keep at pen and ink wash drawing - apparently the process I'm using is completely different from when I do line drawings, much freer. Anyway, I'm trusting her judgement and keeping at it for now. Hopefully my efforts will feed back into the regular line drawings I do as well.

Today is the last day of Art Every Day Month, and with 29 of 30 days spent doing something artistic, I'm pretty happy. My efforts were a bit uneven, but I think it's as much about making time as it is about producing.

I may pace myself differently next time - putting effort into producing a really "finished" piece every 3 days, with practice and prep work every day between. Or, who knows, maybe I'll try something completely different. All I know is I'll be back next year!

Congratulations on everyone else who participated in the challenge, and many thanks to those of you who dropped by here or elsewhere to offer encouragement and many thoughtful comments. Cheers!

I don't experiment in my sketchbook enough. The requirement to post daily - and I know this is entirely self imposed - means I'm more likely to try something safe in the hopes of turning out some passable work.

Thing is, I'm at the phase right now where everything is a funky experiment, so I should probably quit worrying. If I open a gallery and charge admission (ha!) or try to sell coffee table books with my work in it (ha!), I'll worry more about consistently producing meaningful stuff.

I think next year I will set my personal AEDM goals to one "finished work" every three days, with the time in-between for funky experiments or preparatory work.

So, in that spirit, here's a funky experiment - blue india ink, sumi brush, and blue China Marker.

I had a whole day off, and went downtown to look for subjects, but wasn't really moved to draw anything. Instead I read some books at the Library, had some Bahn Mi for lunch, shot pool with a friend for a couple hours in the afternoon, made a crockpot full of great chili, played a bunch of Lexulous via e-mail with another friend, watched Lady Gaga videos way too many times, and finally settled down to do some sketching practice with my crow-quill dip pen and some blue Aladine ink I got for a Christmas present ages before I ever got into drawing. Fun!
