AEDM 2009 #8 - Green Orchid

(Links in this post are mildly NSFW. Just sayin')

Local burlesque performer Frankie Tease has taken over management of what used to be Doctor Sketchy's Portland. It's now called "Live Art".

They've changed up the format a bit, I think for the better. The poses are a bit longer, the atmosphere a bit more low key. I kinda miss the burlesque performance intermission, but there are plenty of burlesque shows in town if I really want to see one.

Cons are the place is pretty small, and if you don't get in early you risk getting stuck in the back or on the side. The 10$ admission quickly turns to $20 with drinks, tips, and parking. The models also shift around a bit more than in figure drawing class.

Still, while I may not make it every month, I will probably go again sometime if the theme sounds good. It's the only game in town if you want to draw a real variety of costumed models, and they were all great this time.

Green Orchid here was dressed like a glamorous Hollywood starlet and did a great job of holding this pose for 20 minutes. In retrospect, I really should have done this in pen and watercolor rather than pencil. Why? Because Green Orchid's hair was...well...green.

AEDM2009 #7 - Dining Room

Day 7 of AEDM. Tired again, but I actually have an excuse this time. Up late dealing with a family illness. (Don't worry, all good now.)

I don't usually scan them and share them, but my notebook has a lot of drawings of my feet. Why? Because on days when I'm super tired, but still committed to drawing, I draw them.

Today I'm super tired, but it's Art Every Day Month, so here goes.

Sometimes you're not feeling particularly inspired, and you draw something totally mundane. And then after a few minutes you forget the mundanity and just draw.

I watch maybe 2 hours of TV a week, plus a movie or an anime show on DVD. With Dollhouse and Fringe on hiatus I'm watching 'Kino's Journey' on DVD, plus odds and ends on Netflix's online service.

How about you?

AEDM 2009 #3 - Carl Sagan

I've been running into Carl Sagan related material all month, which it turns out is no coincidence as he passed away this month 13 years ago. I loved watching Cosmos as a kid - especially the "imaginary spaceship" sequences. I rewatched the first episode last week and it is still fresh and meaningful.

So, when this video came from a friend via e-mail I knew I had to draw him.

Rest in peace, Carl.

Today is actually the midpoint of the class - so far we've done 5 weeks working primarily with pencil doing line drawings. From next week we'll move into mass tools like charcoal and brush.

We're getting exposed to a huge amount of technique in a short span of time. Lots to internalize, but I wouldn't miss it for the world.
